They're Doing in America What They Did to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of a few weeks, the US president started showing the public his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently research projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have attempted – really, no other president would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.

We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' toward 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense of him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for others, especially for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the aggressor; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your coat you must offer them your pullover as well.

The apparent and direct reality that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished is what has always made the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but owing to its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially baptized the status quo.

A Conflict for the Finest Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise in this past year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you receive him and receive them or not?

The nation is most protected, to put it differently, through connection to the highest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to what makes it special and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply pretending the most negative about the nation and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both modesty and conviction, a combination that genuine national faithful ought to accept.
