Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
