European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
