At least 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
